Matajur

Monte Matajur, with its 1642 m, rises above Cividale between the Isonzo Valley and the Slavia Friulana. Legend connects it with the arrival of the Lombards led by Alboin in Italy, and it also played an important historical role during the German offensives of the First World War.

Reaching Montemaggiore (1052 m), you can leave your car along the road. From here, take trail CAI 725 up to Dolina (1401 m); keep right and continue on the same trail until reaching the chapel of Cristo Redentore at the summit (1641 m), after about 2 hours of walking. The peak offers a charming view over all the surrounding valleys, and in favorable weather conditions, the gaze extends from Istria to the Grado lagoon, and to the peaks of Canin, Mangart, Triglav, and the Dolomites.

For the descent, one can follow the path to Rifugio Pellizzo (1325 m), reached in 30 minutes, and after a refreshing break, walk down the paved road for about 1 hour to return to the car.

Advises

Nel periodo invernale non sarà possibile parcheggiare al rifugio Pellizzo a causa della neve (parcheggiare al paesino sottostante).

WARNING

In case of snow, ice or adverse weather conditions, pay close attention to the road, which is very narrow and full of hairpin bends without external protections.
