Monte Coglians

Monte Coglians, at 2780 meters, is the highest peak in Friuli Venezia Giulia and one of the most prestigious destinations for hikers, both local and beyond. Located in the Carnic Alps on the border with Austria, it offers two classic ascent routes. The first, described here, is the normal route from the south, which does not present major technical difficulties. The northern route, instead, involves a demanding via ferrata.

The itinerary starts from Rifugio Tolazzi, which can be reached by car via the road from Forni Avoltri to Collina.

From there, follow the forest road until you reach trail CAI 143, which avoids the uninteresting stretch of road and leads in about 45 minutes to Malga Moraretto. Continue on CAI 143 until reaching Rifugio Marinelli at 2120 m, in about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Following the signs for Monte Coglians, the trail passes below Pic Chiadin, then reaches a fork where you turn left, cross a short ledge, and enter the Ploto valley. The ascent continues on a steep scree slope, with rocky steps and slabs towards the top. After about 2 more hours from Rifugio Marinelli, you will finally stand on the “Roof of Friuli”.

The summit offers a stunning panorama ranging from the Julian Alps to the Venetian Lagoon on clear days.

The descent follows the same path back to Rifugio Tolazzi. Overall, the route is not technically difficult, but it is demanding due to the high elevation gain (approx. 1500 m) and the Ploto valley, which is exposed to the sun and should ideally be tackled early in the morning.

The excursion can be split into two days with an overnight stay at Rifugio Marinelli, or alternatively at Rifugio Tolazzi to allow for an early start.
